Theme: From Farm to Table: Discovering BC Poultry

Overview

Poultry in Motion brings the farm directly to your school, offering an immersive look at the BC poultry industry. Led by Farmer Amanda, a local producer from Chilliwack, students go beyond the classroom to explore the science and hard work behind the food they see at the grocery store.

Key Learning Objectives

By participating in this presentation and completing the leveled activity sheets, students will:

Differentiate Farm Roles: Identify the specific purposes of broiler farms, broiler breeder farms, and table egg farms.
Map the Life Cycle: Sequence the biological stages of a chicken’s development from egg to adult.
Identify Animal Welfare Needs: List the requirements for raising healthy birds, including nutrition, climate-controlled shelter, and biosecurity.
Visualize Modern Agriculture: Describe the interior of a BC poultry barn and the technology used to care for the flock.
Understand Avian Anatomy: Explain what chickens eat and the basic mechanics of how they digest grain.
Humanize Food Production: Connect with the local farming community by learning about the daily life of a BC farmer.
Build Agricultural Literacy: Master new vocabulary words related to farming, biology, and the food chain.
Recognize Local Impact: Understand the value of BC-grown food and its journey from a local farm to their family's table.

Curriculum Integration

This program supports several BC Big Ideas, including:

Science: Living things have life cycles adapted to their environment.
Social Studies: Local communities provide for the needs and wants of the population

Booking Information

To provide this high-quality, free resource to your students, we require a full-day school booking. We encourage teachers to coordinate with other classes to fill a full day of sessions (typically 4–5 sessions per day).

Materials Provided: Every student receives a grade-level activity sheet to reinforce vocabulary and key concepts.
Requirements: A classroom or common space with a screen/projector for photos and videos.

Lesson Objectives: Gr 4-7

For students in Grades 4–7, the presentation becomes more sophisticated. We shift from basic needs to exploring complex systems, a deeper understanding of biology, and the economic impact of farming in British Columbia.

Overview:

Our intermediate program is designed to challenge students to think critically about where their food comes from. By engaging with Farmer Amanda, students move beyond the surface level to understand the intersection of food security, technology, and sustainability in the BC poultry industry.

Key Learning Objectives

The Grades 4–7 sessions focus on "big picture" concepts and the technical side of modern farming:

Supply Chain Diversity: Students investigate the distinct roles of broiler, broiler breeder, and table egg farms, and how they work together to provide food for our province.
Agri-Tech & Innovation: We go inside the barn to see how automated climate control, feeding systems, and strict biosecurity protocols protect the health of the flock.
The Economics of Local Food: Students discuss the importance of food security and why supporting BC farmers—like those in Chilliwack—strengthens our local economy.
Introduction into the concept of Supply Management, and it's role in the agricultural system in BC

Intermediate Activity Sheets

Each student receives a technical activity sheet designed for their grade level. These aren't just puzzles—they are tools for:

Vocabulary Mastery: Learning industry terms like biosecurity, commodity, and supply management.
Critical Thinking: Analyzing systems and solving "real-world" farm challenges.
Curriculum Support: These materials are designed to align with BC Science and Social Studies standards, making them a perfect addition to classroom portfolios.

To provide this high-level educational experience at no cost, we require a full-day school booking. Collaboration is Key: Intermediate teachers are encouraged to partner with other classrooms (including K–3) to create a full day's schedule for Farmer Amanda (usually 4–5 sessions).

Tech Needs: We require a classroom or common area equipped with a screen and projector to display our high-quality farm photography and videos.

Lesson Objectives: Gr 8-12

For students in Grades 8-12, the presentation becomes more sophisticated. Specific topics can be requested such as the history of supply management for history or business management classes in addition to our generlized presentation (ensuring students have a high level understanding of Chicken Production and Management practices in BC, where their food comes from, and the importance of local food production)

Overview

This presentation moves beyond the biological basics and explores the poultry industry as a cornerstone of British Columbia’s agricultural economy. We examine the intersection of government policy, market stability, and global food security.

Key Learning Objectives

The Economics of Supply Management: A technical look at the "three pillars"—production control, pricing, and import control—and how they provide stability for both farmers and consumers.
Local Food Production & Security: Evaluating the role of local farming in maintaining a resilient food supply chain, especially in the face of global disruptions.
Government & Policy: Understanding the relationship between industry boards and government bodies, including the role of the Farm Industry Review Board (FIRB) and the Ministry of Agriculture.
The Poultry Career Ecosystem: Beyond the farm gate—exploring high-level careers in veterinary science, genetics, nutrition, supply chain logistics, and ag-tech.

Career Pathway Map: A resource helping students identify the post-secondary steps required for specialized roles within the poultry industry. (Grades 10-12)
Activity Sheet with vocabulary lessons
Supply Management Worksheet: An exercise where students calcualte production quotas based on market demand to understand price stability.
